Henry Ford's rise to power
|
This video partially describes how Ford Motors came to be. The question is, "How is this a turning point?" It's a turning point because it finally challenged the monopolistic Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers (ALAM), an organization of automobile manufacturers who had a patent on the automobile and could selectively grant or deny permission to produce any and all gas-powered vehicles. Even if they did grant a manufacturer permission, he had to pay them royalties. Due to the patent in place, Ford had to apply for licensing from ALAM. He was denied twice. However, Ford continued to make automobiles. He was attacked through lawsuits and newspapers but found a way to drum up popularity and funds to counterattack ALAM in a campaign of lawsuits of his own. When the dust settled, it was ruled that the patent giving ALAM it's power only covered automobiles of their initial design. This effectively dismantled the monopoly and gave Ford the rights to continue selling the automobile. Because of this, many other companies were able to manufacture and sell automobiles and opened the industry up to everyone.
